We recently were asked by a member of the community about a possible pivot, the following was our reply:
Throne is a startup, and very few tech startups get everything right the first time they launch a new product or service. Even when you find a way to tap into the market, you may discover that you need to fine tune, or pivot because customers have different wants or needs than you expected. A pivot can mean a shift away from your original product or offering to something new that you think customers, clients, or users will be more interested in. BUT it can also be an adaption to new technology that was perhaps overlooked previously as in our case.
Some of the greatest tech pivots include, YouTube which actually launched first as a Dating Site, Twitter was actually a podcasting network named Odeo, Instagram was an app called Burbn that not alot of people used before, even Nintendo started off as a manufacturer of playing cards if you can believe that.
In our case though, an edit or pivot doesnt necessarily mean the whole system or business will need an overhaul, or that it needs to be restarted from scratch. We are doing our best to adapt to new market conditions, in effort to have more relevance in development for the long term. The truth is that pivots are hard. It’s hard to recognize you need a radical course correction. And it’s hard to pull one off once you’ve decided to go for it. A pivot seems almost a rite of passage for the successful team. Slack, the ubiquitous business messaging tool, began its life as a game developer. If the first challenge of any pivot is recognizing the need for radical change, the second might be even more difficult: being brave enough to act decisively. Early-stage teams get fixated on the new product that everyone has come together to build to the point they ignore warning signs in the market and miss the potential to build a different product of more value. We hope we are brave and alert enough to identify and pursue such developments.
We appreciate the dedicated members of the team, community and those joining now, it means everything.
